Regular screening colonoscopies are a crucial practice in preventive healthcare, especially for colorectal cancer. A compelling case from our clinic, involving a 55-year-old male patient, illustrates this importance vividly. This case study not only highlights the process but also the significance of early detection.
During a routine screening colonoscopy, we found a flat polyp as shown above measuring 1.2 cm in diameter. Flat polyps can be more elusive and potentially more dangerous than raised ones, making their early detection critical. Flat polyps are also difficult to identify. An endoscopy system with at least a high definition video with the latest digital chromoendoscopy capability is necessary to detect such lesion.
To address this finding, I performed an Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR). This advanced, minimally invasive technique is sophisticated and safer alternative to traditional surgery. The pathology results brought good news. The polyp was a benign tubular adenoma with no dysplasia
This case reaffirms the life-saving potential of screening colonoscopies. Such procedures are vital for individuals over 50 or those with a familial risk of colorectal cancer. Early detection and removal of polyps like this one can drastically reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
We're proud to share this case to highlight the importance of proactive gastrointestinal health care. We encourage everyone to consult with their healthcare providers about regular screening colonoscopies.
