Colonic polyps are growths that form on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. While most polyps are benign, some can develop into colon cancer over time. Understanding polyps is crucial for colon cancer prevention.
Types of Colonic Polyps:
Adenomatous polyps (adenomas) - These are neoplastic lesions but benign. These polyps when left untreated can potentially develop into colon cancer after 5 - 10 years. Likewise, if removed during a colonoscopy, the risk of colon cancer is then significantly decreased.
Hyperplastic polyps - These are common, benign and does not increase the risk of colon cancer
Sessile serrated polyps - Are also neoplastic polys, rarer than adenomas but has the potential to develop into cacner
Screening colonoscopy is the most effective way to detect and remove polyps before they can develop into cancer. Early detection and removal of polyps can prevent colon cancer.
